Stilfser Joch
Ortler Alps
The pass summit of one of the most interesting mountain passes in the Alps. It is the second highest pass (2757 m) and therefore interesting for everybody driving something with wheels or walking.
The pass connects the german speaking South Tyrol with the italien speaking Valtellina.
It was the first photograph for the “Passbilder” Book that I took, when I was working on a documentary about the changes in the Alps for the magazine stern. At the moment of taking the photograph, I wondered if I had started a new and unknown project.
I had still taken the photograph with my beloved Linhof Master Technika on 4×5″ film.
It has remained one of my favorite photographs. This is also due to the fact that this image contains an irritation. The freshly asphalted road reminded me of a Carrera race track, then a vintage car was driving along the road and the lighting mood was perfect.
When I saw the negative scanned for the first time, I realized that it would be a new and interesting project.
