Splügen Pass II
Grison Alps, Italy
The imposing southern ramp was built between 1818 and 1820 under the direction of Carlo Donegani, who was also responsible for the famous eastern ramp of the Stelvio Pass in South Tyrol shortly afterwards. More than 20 hairpin bends, galleries and short tunnels overcome the steep wall that leads from Val San Giacomo up to the pass. This part of Italy still belonged to the Habsburg Empire at the time of construction.
The Splügen Pass connects Graubünden with Lake Como.
It was not easy to find a suitable vantage point for a view of the southern ramp. I explored the road on foot on a Sunday morning, fortunately there were hardly any vehicles on the road and I finally found a safe spot from where I could take a good photograph of the road with its many hairpin bends and tunnels.
One of my favorite motifs from the series.
