Colle del Nivolet
Grajische Alpen, Italien
The south ramp was built mainly as a maintenance road to the two reservoirs, Lago Serru and Lago Agnel. The road climbs 2000 m to the top of the pass summit at 2612 m, where it ends – it is a one-way road. The northern ramp to the Aosta Valley was never realized. Today it is a gateway to the beautiful Gran Paradiso National Park.
The Nivolet Pass is very close to the French border. In the last years of the Second World War, partisans could find refuge in this remote area in the northwesternmost part of Piedmont.
The photograph was taken in the morning, I walked up and down the road the evening before to find the ideal position. So the next morning, I could easily find the place again, set up the tripod and expose this photograph, and I still had time to photograph the path of the partisans close to the road.
