Alpe d'Huez
Oisans, Dauphiné-Alpen
These hairpin bends are legendary. The climb to Alpe d’Huez covers 21 hairpin bends over a distance of around 14.5 kilometres, gaining more than 1,100 metres in altitude. Each bend is named after a cyclist who has left their mark on the history of this famous Tour de France climb – from Giuseppe Guerini to Fausto Coppi. In the ski resort, the road also branches off towards the quieter Col de Sarenne.
I was already familiar with this road from previous visits, but it took me some time to find this view. I was all the happier, then, to finally be able to photograph this combination of road, landscape and the Église Saint-Ferréol d’Huez – a great addition to this project.
