The Barber's Chair
In Bodie, the barber’s trade was no mere side business. It was a vital hub — for news, advice, and simply for keeping clean. Sitting in the chair, one learnt a great deal: what was happening in town, what rumours were circulating, and who was best avoided.
In a town where people often vanished as quickly as they had arrived, Joe Hahner ran his barbershop for a long time. His shop was on Main Street, next door to Sam Leon’s bar, and was the last of its kind to open in Bodie before the town was abandoned.
The chair is still there. The dark blue upholstery, the curved backrest. No one has taken it away. No one has replaced it.
