Great St Bernard Pass
Pennine Alps
View of the southern approach of one of the most important Alpine crossings, forming the border between Italy and Switzerland and connecting the Swiss Rhône Valley with the Italian Aosta Valley. This pass is steeped in history — from the Neolithic period, the Celts and the Romans, to the famous Hospice du Grand-Saint-Bernard, the St Bernard dogs, Napoleon Bonaparte, and the first modern road in the early 20th century.
I wanted to portray this important pass in a very special way. I photographed the scene from dusk into the night, a one-hour exposure. You can see the light trails of vehicles along the road, as well as the lights glowing inside the campervans, yet the scene still conveys the feeling of an early evening atmosphere. A photograph I was extremely happy with.
