Sankt Gotthard Pass III
Canton Ticino
A view of the old cobbled road just below the pass summit. The first passable road over the Gotthard was completed as early as 1830 for horse-drawn carts.
I was taking photographs that day up at Lago di Lucendro, but as the weather went from bad to worse, with a fierce wind sweeping across the pass, I had to call it a day. I was on my way back along the old pass road; visibility was now barely more than 30 metres when a small gap in the clouds opened up. I set up the camera and tripod as quickly as possible, and in a fraction of a second this wonderful view of the Gotthard Pass appeared. Two seconds later, everything was once again shrouded in thick clouds.
Another reason why I love ‘bad’ weather in the Alps. And so, quite unexpectedly, I ended up with a perfect shot of the old northern ramp.
