Staller Sattel
South Tyrol - Eastern Tyrol
The Staller Sattel (Passo di Stalle) is certainly one of the most beautiful routes to South Tyrol. The pass connects the Antholz Valley in South Tyrol with the Defereggen Valley in East Tyrol.
The road on the Italian side was originally built as a military road under Mussolini, but the pass itself is much older. A dugout canoe from the Stone Age was even discovered at the Obersee lake on the austrian side of the pass, at an altitude of over 2000 metres.
Today, the single-lane road on the South Tyrolean side is regulated by traffic lights: Every 30 minutes, the one-way traffic flow to and from the pass changes.
The photograph shows the south-west approach against the backdrop of the Rieserferner group. The road leads through an extremely attractive landscape. Thanks to the one-way traffic regulation, it was quite comfortable to walk along the road and look for a good viewpoint in peace. I then found three motifs, which I photographed over the course of the evening. The third one, in which the light is particularly soft due to the fine layer of cloud, is my favourite.
