Julier Pass
Graubünden, Switzerland
View of the western approach. The pass, which is open all year round, connects Tiefencastel with the Engadin.
On the western approach to the Julier Pass, there is a very distinctive series of bends that I wanted to photograph. It is located just below the summit.
I looked for a spot from which I could photograph this view and found the perfect spot early in the morning at sunrise. However, contrary to the weather forecast from the previous evening, the light was anything but ideal, so I decided to return in the late afternoon.
The light wasn’t quite perfect then either, but within minutes clouds swept through the valley towards the pass at such breakneck speed that I was only able to take two shots. Fortunately, this one was a perfect shot, and I made my way down to the road through the mist and eventually into the darkness.
