Stilfser Joch II
Ortler Alps
View of the eastern ramp – the masterpiece of engineer Carlo Donegani. The first road was built between 1820 bis 1826 on behalf of the Austrian monarchy and was intended to connect Tyrol with Lombardy.
In 1859, Austria had to cede Lombardy to the Kingdom of Italy and the border ran over the Stelvio Pass. During World War I, there were fierce battles on the Stelvio, the traces of which can still be seen everywhere today.
The eastern ramp has 48 hairpin bends up to the summit. I photographed this view in early October, when it was unusually mild on the Stelvio Pass. The grass has long since turned yellow-red at this time of year and the soft light enhances this colorfulness. On the way to this viewpoint, you will repeatedly come across traces of the high mountain war.
This photograph also became the cover of the book “Passbilder – Landschaften der Alpenpässe.”
