Monument Valley
A view of the three table mountains: West Mitten Butte, East Mitten Butte and Merrick Butte. The classic view that you think you know — and yet never really know until you stand before it yourself. For the Navajo, these are not rocks, but beings: West Mitten is a male spirit being looking eastwards, East Mitten a female one looking westwards. They have been gazing at each other for millennia.
The image was taken on medium-format negative film. You can see it in the fine grain, in the stillness of the grey tones.
I love the images in this series immensely – to me, they have a timeless quality that also connects me personally with the young photographer of that time. The same passion, the same patience to invest time in an image. Back then, shooting analogue meant: thinking, waiting, deciding. No second chance, no chimping.
