Mont-Blanc Express II
Route of the Mont-Blanc Express. The picture shows the section between Chamonix and the double station of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains & Le Fayet.
Anyone who has ever driven by car on the RN 205 through the Arve valley to Chamonix will certainly remember the unique traffic routing. On the way up to Chamonix, you drive on the left-hand side on the daring Viaduc des Egratz bridge in a wide arc high above the valley, with the Arve River below you and the downhill road on the mountainside on the right – it’s a topsy-turvy world.
The railroad line runs between the divided roads in the valley below and is barely visible. I searched for quite a long time – undergrowth is the key word here – until I found this spot on a mountainside. A waterfall was raging below and I had the timetable to hand, but unlike many other places, I couldn’t hear when the train was coming. So it was a game of patience that was worth it in the end.
