Grimsel Pass
Bernese Oberland - Valais
View of the mighty south ramp leading up from Gletsch to the Totesee. The pass connects the Rhône Valley with the Bernese Oberland.
The Grimsel Pass was already of some importance under the Romans, who built a mule track over the pass. In the Middle Ages, the route continued to the Simplon and finally another pass connection opened up: over the Grimsel and the Griespass into Lombardy.
I photographed the pass in June, the winter closure had just been lifted since a week, when I found this view of the south ramp. The impressive road course is enhanced because the view to the pass is obscured with clouds at the top.
