Col de la Colombière
Savoyer Alpen
The Col de la Colombière in the Bornes massif in Haute-Savoie is the second major stop on the legendary Route des Grandes Alpes and forms a vital link between Lake Geneva and the high Alps of the Mont Blanc massif. Just before the summit, the road runs beneath the limestone cliffs of the Pic de Jallouvre and Pointe Blanche.
The steep northern approach has made the pass a classic stage of the Tour de France. At the foot of the pass, around Le Grand-Bornand, lies the home of the famous Reblochon cheese.
I photographed the pass in summer: you can see hikers returning from or setting off on walks, and campers who have set up camp along the pass road.
