Col de l’Iseran II
Graian Alps, France
The landscape on the southeren approach and also the road have always retained something mysterious for me. I can hardly put it into words.
I actually wanted to take photographs in the lower part of the south ramp, when the visibility became worse and worse due to clouds rolling in. More than walking speed would not have been possible and I decided I would rather explore this part of the pass on foot for the last hours of daylight.
I walked downhill for a few minutes, the visibility still completely unsuitable for a decent photograph. On the way back there was a loud rumble from the depths below the road and shortly afterwards I found a spot next to the road, which I had previously overlooked, where I could safely set up the tripod. But for the time being there was nothing to see. But I only had to wait a good 15 minutes, listening to the rumble down in the depths, until the fog receded enough to take this photograph. It is one of my favourite views of this mighty pass.
